Our Wild Terebinth (Trimithia or Τριμιθιά) Essential Oil (Pistacia terebinthus) was steam distilled from sustainably foraged plants in Pyrga. We harvest them in mid-summer when the berries begin to ripen, and choose a blend of male and female plants. This batch was harvested and distilled in June 2025. After harvesting the branches, leaves and unripe seeds we fed it into our wood chipper and distilled it for five to six hours. It was our first time trying Wild Terebinth, and the yield was quite low, around .1%, like its sister plant Schinos. As far as we are aware, we are the only one who are distilling this oil and offering it for sale.
The main components of our Wild Terebinth Essential Oil are: a-Pinene (40%), Limonene (10%), b-Pinene (7%), Myrcene (6%), (E)-beta-Ocimene (4%), Sabinene (3%), para-Cymene (3%), delta-3-carene (3%), Camphene (2%), and beta-Caryophyllene (2%).
This Essential oil has a sweet, woody and balsamic smell. It has a resinous undertone, and faintly smells like Frankincense. It is a plant known in the Greek world since antiquity, and it's also mentioned in the Bible. The trees were tapped and the resin was harvested for medicinal and other uses. The resin was used to flavor wine, and used in the preparation of perfumes. Production of the seed oil was mentioned in historical travel accounts of Cyprus. Residues of the plant were found at the perfume factory in the Pyrgos archaeological site.
In Cyprus, the seeds are still harvested and used to make a special type of flatbread.
