Schinos (Mastiha) Seed Oil (Pistacia lentiscus)

The Pistacia lentiscus Seed Oil, also called Mastiha oil or Lentisk oil, has one of the most distinctive scents of Cyprus. The Pistacia lentiscus bush (Schoinia) can be found all over Cyprus and its seeds/berries are a part of Cypriot cuisine. The most known uses is in the sausages and Schoinopites. The oil has a woody spicy smell and can be used as a finishing oil, especially in meat dishes or in salad dressings. 

Besides the culinary uses, Pistacia lentiscus Seed Oil is known for its anti-inflammatory, cleansing, antiseptic, healing and soothing effects. In traditional medicine it was used to treat skin, respiratory and gastrointestinal problems.

Pistacia lentiscus seed oil is distinct from mastic resin or mastiha. While both are derived from the Pistacia lentiscus tree, the seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the tree rather than from the resin.
