Oregano Essential Oil
Our Oregano Essential Oil was steam distilled from in June 2024.
Botanical name: Origanum dubium
Who doesn't think of the Mediterranean, when encountering pungent oregano? Oregano is known for its strong and spicy aroma and it's one of the most popular herbs in Mediterranean cuisine.
The genus "Origanum" comes from the Greek word Origanon. It is speculated that the term "Ορίγανον" is made of two elements: "όρος" meaning mountains and "γάνος" brightness—with the resulting compound name meaning something like the brightness of the mountains also interpreted as the joy of mountains.
In ancient Greece, oregano symbolized happiness. It was used to combat sadness and bring good luck, and was thought to be precious to the Greek goddess Aphrodite.
The oregano we distilled (Origanum dubium) is native to Cyprus. It can be found wild mostly in the Paphos forest area at an altitude of between 200 – 1000m. The oregano we sourced for our distillations came from three different herb growers in different microclimates - two family farms and one industrial grower. The result is three slightly different essential oils. We invite you to come to our factory to try each one!
Besides being "essential" in Greek salad and pizza, oregano has many more culinary and well-being applications. It is strongly antibacterial, and also has antioxidant antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal properties.
Since ancient times, oregano has been known as a medicinal herb. Hippocrates perscribes oregano to treat throat, stomach and skin infections. Egyptians used oregano as a preservative and as an antidote in case of poisoning.
Oregano essential oil can be used (sparingly) in place of dried herbs while cooking.
Oregano oil is a strong irritant and should be used with extreme care if applied to the skin - always use it heavily diluted in a carrier oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.
