Our Wild Lavender essential oil is distilled from plants grown in Arakapas, Cyprus.
As the essential oil derives from the distillation of the whole plant, it has a sweet and camphoraceous scent.
Botanical name: Lavandula stoechas
First described by Dioscorides in De Materia Medica as Stoichas, this wild Mediterranean lavender was traditionally used for chest and respiratory ailments, valued for its sharp, therapeutic aroma.
In Cyprus this species is called Μυροφόρα (which has, gives off a pleasant smell). Lavender essential oil has a balancing and calming effect with a floral, fresh, clean and sweet aroma. Its name comes from the Latin verb “lavare” which means to wash. The Romans used lavender flowers to perfume their bath water.
In traditional medicine, lavender was used to treat a range of problems like skin, gastrointestinal, neurological and musculoskeletal.
Lavender tea was used to relieve migraines and stomachaches.
Dry lavender in sachets is used in wardrobes to protect the clothes from months and give them nice smell. In addition, hanging lavender flowers next to the bed had a calming effect on babies.
Lavender oil has antiseptic properties and it was an important component in soaps and to dress battle wounds. Egyptians were also using lavender in perfumes and traces were also found in Pharaohs’ tombs. Lavender oil can also be used as an insect repellent.
