Our current batch of Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) Essential Oil was distilled in May 2025, from the small branches and berries (cones). We sourced the material from the two trees on our workshop, as well as other wild trees in Kornos and Pyrga. Cypress distillation takes place over two days, first we prepare the material by chopping. Then we run a very short distillation of one hour, after which we let the material sit for overnight. The following morning we run another distillation of 4 hours. We combine the two fractions of oils, and the result is amazing in complexity and freshness, woody, sweet and balsamic! The yield of oils is around 0.5%.
Cypress is an evergreen conifer tree, native to the East Mediterranean. The Cypress tree is associated with grief and lamentation, often found near burial grounds. In addition, Cypress is associated with the Greek gods Apollo, Artemis and Hades, often found around their temples. In ancient Greece: some wooden representations of the gods called "ξόανα" made from Cypress.
In traditional medicine, the Cypress tree was used like the other conifers: for respiratory and musculoskeletal problems and antimicrobial properties. Furthermore, cypress was burned as incense for air purification.
