Seasonality in Oils

Seasonality is a natural part of working with real oils.

When a product is made from plants, seeds and fruits, it will not be exactly the same every time. This is because the raw material itself changes. Weather conditions, rainfall, soil quality and harvest timing all influence the final oil.

A dry year will produce a different result than a wet one. A colder winter will affect the composition of herbs. Even harvesting a few weeks earlier or later can change the aroma and feel of an oil.

At Liven, we do not try to correct or standardize these differences.

Most oils available on the global market are expected to be identical year round. To achieve this, they are often refined, blended across large batches, or adjusted to maintain consistency. This process removes variation, but it also removes much of the character of the oil.

Our approach is different.

We produce our oils in small batches using local raw materials, and we work with what each season provides. This means that each batch reflects the conditions in which it was grown and produced. The oil you receive is a direct result of that specific time and place.

This means that a grapeseed oil may be slightly fruitier in one pressing, or a citrus oil more intense depending on the harvest. Herbal distillations may vary subtly from year to year.

This may result in small differences in aroma, color or texture from one batch to another. These differences are not a flaw. They are an indication that the oil has not been altered or standardized. In nature, diversity is the standard, not uniformity.

Seasonality requires a different way of understanding quality.

Instead of expecting the same product all year round, it means recognizing that natural products change. It means accepting variation as part of the process, rather than something to be corrected.

At Liven, we choose to work with these variations rather than against them. It allows us to keep our oils as close as possible to their natural state, without unnecessary processing or intervention.

An oil that changes is an oil that reflects where and when it was made.
