Does Local Mean Lower Quality?

It is easy to assume that larger brands produce better products because they have polished packaging, extensive marketing, and global distribution, and their labels can have multiple claims and endorsements. In reality, those factors say very little about the quality of the product itself.
On the positive side, mass production can produce and distribute a standardized product all over the world. But at the same time, it requires certain compromises. Perhaps for some products it is desirable, but for others, the negatives outweigh the positives. To manufacture at scale, large brands often standardise formulations, substitute premium ingredients with cheaper alternatives, and extend shelf life with synthetic additives. The result is a consistent product, but consistency does not always mean good, or good for you. It means predictable, cost-controlled, and designed to survive a long supply chain. Also, a large marketing budget can mean lots of "claims," which may or may not be true, and usually aren't policed by any authority.
Small-batch and local production works differently. When a producer makes a smaller quantity, they can choose to source better raw materials, adjust formulations based on seasonal ingredient quality, and pay closer attention to every step of the process. In our industry, it's like buying a packaged sauce in the supermarket, full of additives and preservatives, versus making a fresh salad dressing or marinade at home. The second takes more time, might not always come out the same, and cannot be stored indefinitely, but the taste and vibrancy are unparalleled.
Evaluating quality is simpler than it sounds. Read the ingredient list. Understand where the key materials come from. Think about how much of the cost of a product is going to the logistics, marketing and retailer, compared to the labor and raw material to actually make the product. Ask whether the producer can tell you how and where something was made. A brand that cannot or will not answer those questions is probably not the one setting the standard.
