Wild Myrtle Essential Oil
Wild Myrtle Essential Oil
Our Myrtle essential oil is distilled from the fruits, flowers and tops of wild plants harvested in July and October in the Arakapas and Kornos areas of Cyprus.
Myrtle (Myrtus communis) is an evergreen shrub or small tree bearing white flowers, edible blue-black berries, and aromatic leaves.
Myrtle is a revered plant in many of the region’s religions and mythologies, and we can understand why! It has an alluring and uplifting aroma, and is used as a top note in perfume blends. It is known to have sedative and calming qualities, and can be inhaled or mixed into a base oil for use on the skin. Myrtle grows wild all over Cyprus, in riverbeds, and is closely associated with Aphrodite. Myrtle was sacred to the goddess Aphrodite. Its branches were woven into garlands and used to scent waters for bathing and blessing.
Myrtle decoction was used in Cyprus for haircare, to prevent hair loss and make the hair easier to comb. Powder made from dry myrtle leaves was being used to treat skin problems such as fungi, rushes and sweat. Inhaling the steam from Myrtle leaves was used to relieve congestion.
We can’t get enough of the aroma, and it’s been a popular oil. We have been scouting locations where Myrtle grows wild, and only take a small amount of prunings from large populations.
