Myrtle grows wild all over Cyprus, in riverbeds, and is closely associated with Aphrodite, who is the goddess of Love, and is strongly associated with Cyprus. Myrtle was sacred to the goddess Aphrodite, and myth is that when she arose from the sea near Paphos she hid in a myrtle bush to hide her nudity. Its branches were woven into garlands and used to scent waters for bathing and blessing.
