The species of wild peppermint native to Cyprus (Mentha longifolia ssp. cypriaca) is very special. It is an endemic subspecies that grows by the rivers and has a sweet and refreshing smell. Our wild peppermint was sustainably foraged from Arakapas, Cyprus. Our Wild Peppermint Essential Oil was distilled from the whole plant.

The typical Mentha longifolia can be found in other European countries, Eastern and Southern Africa and in Southwest and Central Asia. The Latin name longifolia refers to its long leaves. In Cyprus it's called "Ποταμοείτανος" or "Ποταμογείτονας" which explains that it can be found on the sides of the rivers.

Wild Peppermint was traditionally used in the form of tea to treat gastrointestinal problems. Also, rubbing the oil on the temples and the back of the neck was used to relieve migraines. It had also culinary uses by adding the herb in salads and replacing spearmint.

The species is also called horsemint and it is mentioned in the Bible. Mint represented wealth and abundance and in addition it had culinary uses and used to be sprinkled on the floor to perfume the space.

Mint (Minthē) appears in the Greek mythology as a Nymph. Minthē was seduced by Hades, the King of Underworld. However, Hades' wife, Persephone crushed Minthē under her foot, dissolved them, and transformed her into "ηδύοσμον" plant which means sweet smell. According to another source, the wrath of Persephone's mother, Demeter, which was the goddess of harvest, transformed Minthē into the plant of the same name (mint).

Peppermint essential oil has shown to increase circulation and boost hair growth (that's why it's an ingredient in our Seasonal Hair and Beard Oil). Peppermint essential oil was found to help reducing menopausal symptoms. Peppermint has cooling properties, therefore when added into a blend and applied on skin, it can relieve muscle pain. Peppermint can help relieve congestion when inhaling its steams.

How to use:

▪️Always heavily dilute the Wild Peppermint Essential Oil with a carrier oil before using on the skin.
