Our Thyme Essential Oil (Thymus capitatus) was distilled from semi-dry plants organically grown in Maroni. This species is also called Thymbra capitata, wild thyme, “θρουμπί” (throumbí) in Cyprus. Wild thyme is an aromatic plant, native species of Cyprus that belongs to the family of Lamiaceae.
Wild thyme is an important flowering plant for honeybees. Its leaves and purple flowers are collected and used fresh or dry in cooking, especially in the Troodos villages. In addition, a daily ritual of people living in Troodos mountains was to drink a brewed wild thyme tea. The tea was considered to soothe pains in the digestive tract. Another method of using thyme was by infusing it in olive oil. This infused oil was used for skin problems and rubbing it on the chest helped to soothe coughing.
The plant is quite woody, and its above-ground parts were used to craft the traditional Cypriot broom “σαρκά”(sarká).
The essential oil has a fresh and pungent aroma, similar to oregano, but with a sharp sensation in the nasal passages (we learned first-hand when we opened the still and burned our nose (#notrecommended).
Thyme essential oil contains Carvacrol and thymol. The main component of our thyme essential oil is Carvacrol. Carvacrol and thymol are phenols with powerful antibiotic effects and are extensively researched for their ability to inhibit a range of bacteria.
Our Thyme essential oil is a very potent and should be used with extreme care - always use it heavily diluted in a carrier oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.
We created our Wild Thyme Grapeseed Oil, a culinary oil, which can be used directly in food without risk of burning.
