Liven Essentials Cyprus
Spearmint Essential Oil
Spearmint Essential Oil
Botanical name: Mentha spicata
Our Spearmint Essential Oil was steam distilled from partially dried plant material. The plant material was sourced from a large herb grower. It's the same premium Spearmint that goes to the retail market in Cyprus and abroad, it's just the excess that doesn't meet the specifications of size or shape.
Spearmint is featured in every Cypriot garden. It is unmistakably associated with Cypriot cuisine. Spearmint provides the characteristic fragrance of the Halloumi cheese and in many more Cypriot treats. Spearmint tea was one of the beverages that people could have in the traditional coffee shop.
People were harvesting spearmint around Easter so they can dry it and have for the rest of the year.
In traditional medicine, spearmint tea (from fresh or dry leaves) was used to treat common cold and stomach and abdominal issues. Spearmint tea was also given to babies to mitigate gastrointestinal problems and to calm them down.
Our Spearmint Essential Oil has a sweet herbaceous smell. Due to its antimicrobial properties and its freshness Spearmint Essential Oil is mainly used as a flavouring in oral hygiene, gum and candy products. Spearmint Essential Oil is milder than Peppermint (less concentration of menthol).
Spearmint is a main component of Mojito cocktail. Adding 1-2 drops of Spearmint Essential Oil in your dessert or drink can promote digestion and provide a fresh aroma.
Mint (Minthē) appears in the Greek mythology as a Nymph. Minthē was seduced by Hades, the King of Underworld. However, Hades' wife, Persephone crushed Minthē under her foot, dissolved them, and transformed her into "ηδύοσμον" (Δυόσμος) plant which means sweet smell. According to another source, the wrath of Persephone's mother, Demeter, which was the goddess of harvest, transformed Minthē into the plant of the same name (mint).
