Monk's Pepper Essential Oil
Monk's Pepper Essential Oil
Botanical name: Vitex agnus castus
Native to the Mediterranean and Central Asia, Monk's Pepper (Vitex agnus-castus, Chaste tree, Λυγαριά, Αγνιά), also known as chaste tree, has been revered for centuries for its medicinal properties. It thrives in warm, sunny climates and has long been associated with monastic communities, where it was traditionally cultivated and used to promote chastity and calm the spirit.
In ancient Greece and Rome, Monk's Pepper was a key ingredient in remedies for women's health. It was believed to balance hormones and support reproductive health, particularly during menstruation and menopause. The monks of the Middle Ages used pepper as a spice. Monks and healers also used the berries to reduce sexual desire, hence its association with chastity. In traditional European herbalism, Monk's Pepper was valued for its ability to alleviate symptoms of PMS and promote overall well-being.
In Cyprus a decoction of the leaves was used as a pain reliever for the mothers that just gave birth. In addition, the elastic branches were used in basketry.
Our monk's pepper was steam distilled from sustainably foraged leaves, twigs and flowers in September 2024. The oil has a spicy herbaceous aroma making it a grounding and calming addition to aromatherapy blends.
Monk's Pepper essential oil is prized for its balancing effects, particularly on the endocrine system. It’s often used in natural remedies to help support women's hormonal health, reduce stress, and soothe tension. When diluted in a carrier oil, it can be massaged into the abdomen or lower back to ease menstrual discomfort. Adding some drops in a diffuser can help promote relaxation and balance.
