Essential Oils

Why do plants produce essential oils?

Essential oils are also known as ethereal oils due to their volatile properties. An essential oil is a plant extract which contains the essence of the plant's fragrance. Essential oils are plant's natural defense mechanism. They are part of the immune system by having antibacterial, antifungal and/or antiviral properties. Essential oils also serve as cues for to attract pollinators or deter /repel predators. In addition, essential oils act as hormones and signals between plants.

Extraction

An essential oil can be produced via distillation, expression or other extraction processes.

Benefits

Ancient civilizations have long implemented Aromatherapy as a holistic treatment for mental, physical and spiritual wellness by utilising the properties of essential oils.

Usage

Essential oils can be used in daily life, in different ways. Based on the type of the essential oil, essential oils have the capacity to induce relaxation or invigoration. Essential oils can be used in a diffuser, in bath, in massage, in steam inhalation, in skincare, even in cuisine and cocktail making.

A few drops of essential oils in a diffuser can improve the quality of the atmosphere, promote a relaxing environment and assist focus and concentration.

The use of essential oils in massage is a perfect way to relax the body, reduce stress and muscle pain and promote a feeling of euphoria. Essential oils should always be diluted into carrier oils (base oils) before applied to skin.

Since antiquity, essential oil drops were added to warm bath water to give fragrance and relax the body.

Steam inhalation helps open the sinuses, especially during winter months. A few drops of essential oils in a bowl of warm water can ease breathing and cleanse the face. Inhalation should be done with closed eyes and for a few minutes only.
